Hello, I am Sarah from Bangladesh. My story is about the epic rainfall this year in our country.
Honestly speaking, I have been writing paragraphs on climate change from grade four. But all this time, I never realized its true meaning or impact, and I just memorized these paragraphs or essays from my grammar book in order to get good marks in my exam. I never thought about climate change in reality because all this time the change was insignificant. But this year was an exception for me and I, by myself, could understand those changes. I saw these with my own eyes and felt it. There was more rainfall this year. In Bangladesh, rainy season starts from April and ends in September. Whereas this year rain did not stop even at the end of October. We used to play badminton from October but because of the weather change we could not play badminton till now. The kids and the boy used to play Cricket in these times but because of the rain they couldn't play. The field stays soggy and muddy. They can’t play football. Me and my friends used to hang out together and walk in the fields. We used to talk and gossip around. But because of heavy rainfall, trust me we had no hangouts for months in the afternoon. I have passed my S.S.C this year more like a 10th board exam. So after the exam we usually have a break of 3-4 months. Accordingly our S.S.C examination was finished on 23 May, 2023 and my 11th grade started on 8 October, 2023. Therefore we had up to 4 months long break. We had a lot of plans to do in that break but alas! Because of the rain our plans were canceled. We even wanted to hangout for the last time on 7 October before starting school again. We got ready for our day, we dressed up that day. We wanted to watch a movie in the cinema hall or go to a restaurant. We had our plans that we will go together in my friend’s car. Her father’s gonna drop us there and we will have lunch together. But do you know what happened? Heavy rainfall started and we patiently waited for the rain to stop but the rain didn’t stop. So our plans were canceled. We were so sad and we thought let’s watch a movie together on Netflix. So one of my friends had Netflix on her TV and we thought of going to our house. Mark that we live in a residential campus area. Her building was in front of mine but I couldn’t go because there was a mini ocean on our campus. So we were devastated and we realized that really the climate was changing. Every time a mini ocean occurs when rain falls heavily. Let me show you a picture of my campus when a mini ocean occurs due to heavy rainfall.
My friend took the picture, and in the picture it is the playground. And because of the heavy rain, the playground turned into a small ocean. Honestly, our country has a poor drainage system and for that reason these mini oceans occur. I just don’t like it anymore. Another day in September, I had a National Math Olympiad competition and I needed to be at the venue at 8 o’ clock. But before that day, rain was falling at its highest rate for the year so the roads were covered with water and nobody could go outside. So I had a lot of trouble going to the venue. Even sometimes there are some boats for the rains on the road. Now I’ve really realized that all this happens because of us. We human beings are at fault. We pollute our atmosphere and this results in climate change and disasters. I think we should highly think about solving this problem. I even stopped drinking from plastic bottles and I’ve stopped using plastic straws. I have cleared the national level of Earth and Science Olympiad. And I attended Green Day Training there. I learned that our small acts reflect the whole results. And after that I became very cautious of the climate and environment.
